Message boards and blog comment listings are filling up with people congratulating Americans (isn’t there a more accurate term for who we are?) for what we’ve done. I haven’t seen any condescension or even anybody mentioning George W. Bush—it’s really amazing.

The whole world has breathed a sigh of relief I think. On Wednesday morning, my classmates (none of whom are American) told me they woke up at the crack of dawn to see who had won. I went to a concert Wednesday night in Paris and a concert-hall packed with (mostly) non-Americans cheered when the lead-singer mentioned it… he said, “America suddenly seems cool again” and then immediately dove into an improvised version of “Eye of the Tiger.” Oh yes.
