Eccentricity

Thursday, March 23rd, 2006

Donnell and I celebrated our twelfth wedding anniversary on March 13 of this year. We’ve never been sticklers for the ‘traditional’ anniversary gifts, and this year my lovely wife gave me exactly what I’d been searching for: a pocketwatch and a fountain pen.

Being consistently dissatisfied with wristwatches, I’ve wanted a pocketwatch for years but never could find one that worked for me. Fossil happens to make a pair of them which are large enough to be readable, small enough to fit in the watch pocket of most pants, and stylish enough (beaded striping on both sides of the case, and an oystershell-like polished interior) to work for all occasions. I love it!

Likewise, I’ve been hesitant to buy a fountain pen because I just couldn’t find one that I’d be happy with. As it turns out, what I’m happy with is a Pelikan piston-filled model. It has a gorgeous blue-and-gold striped barrel with a black cap and silver trim, measures some seven inches long when the cap is registered (I think that’s the right term) and just feels right when held. I haven’t yet filled and used it yet, however, because I don’t really have a place for writing. I’m considering buying a nice pen cup for my nightstand and a small lap desk that I can put underneath said stand. I’d like to make a habit of writing each evening before bed, and now I have the perfect writing instrument with which to do it.

Thank you, sweetheart!

Slow Going

I’m just about done with the first iteration of my Rails-based TKD DoJang Administration application (which doesn’t yet have a name or a logo…hmm…)—I hope to install it next week and get to work on the next iteration.

This weekend will see a Rails implementation of my freight truck-tracking application, which should lead to a rapid-fire development cycle (and income, I hope). It’ll be my first Rails application to be rolled out on a server not under my control. We’ll see how it goes.
