I Have Been Remiss
Sunday, November 14th, 2004The Election
I’m no more upset about the outcome of the recent Presidential election than I would have been had Kerry won—I voted for neither of them. Having already been convinced that Texas was by no means a swing state, I decided to vote according to my conscience and cast my ballot for the Libertarian candidate. Now, I don’t believe that the United States will ever have a declared Libertarian in the Oval Office, but I’d like to think that casting my vote for them will help to raise the public’s level of awareness of Libertarian values and ideals, and the more Libertarian the President, the better.
The Television
Donnell and I are the proud (and somewhat bashful) owners of a 42” Grand WEGA LCD projection television set. It’s simply amazing. I justify it by explaining that we are avid movie-watchers and videogame-players, and this HDTV-compatible television should serve our viewing needs for at least 10-15 years. When fed a high-quality signal (as from our DVD player or Playstation 2), the picture is unbelievably crisp, and even the low-quality signals from the Tivo are more pleasant than any normal NTSC CRT I’ve seen. Yes, it’s decadant. Sue us.
The Birthday
I’m on the verge of turning 33 and, while I know that these annual divisions that we make in our lives bear as little relevance to the actual state of things as the arrangement of constellations in the sky, I’ve almost made up my mind to make this a real turning point. Tomorrow, I will start being more conscientious, sympathetic, creative, self-aware, forthright, generous, responsible, and thoughtful than ever before. The changes will be small at first, and I will occasionally backslide a bit, but I’ve determined that I have been a selfish, thoughtless person for far too long. I like myself more when I’ve done thoughtful things, and there’s no point in leaving those moments up to chance.
Donnell
She is as wonderful as ever. I tell her this often, though I suspect she doesn’t really believe me. Fortunately, the truthfulness of the statement isn’t contingent upon her belief. She is my friend, my confidante, my lover…and I cannot imagine how others must feel going through their lives without their very own Donnell. If there is an actual state of being that corresponds with the term blessed, I am living in it.
