I used to think I did origami fairly well, but I know now that I was a rank amateur.

This is origami.

August Skies

Friday, August 20th, 2004

It’s 8:10 PM on August 19, 2004, and Central Texas is orange.

The rain started pouring down just before 5:00 PM and let up not long ago, as the sun crouched low in the sky. Clouds are layered from one horizon to the other except to the north, where a sliver of brilliant sapphire blue may be seen. Just above us, the bottoms of the clouds are twisted just so, bringing to mind Katsushika Hokusai’s In the Hollow of a Wave off the Coast at Kanagawa, only inverted and painted in a lovely soft orange.

You’ve seen this kind of light before—it makes everything glow as though the animus within is straining to burst out.

I live for moments like this.

Julia Child has passed on…

Friday, August 13th, 2004

If you’re an American who has ever had a good meal, odds are you owe a debt of gratitude to this woman.

Mrs. Child died today at the age of 91.

Is it just me, or have our heroes had a rash of bad luck lately?

Wikipedia

I direct your attention today to Wikipedia, whose organizers describe it as “an encyclopedia written collaboratively by its readers”.

Widely hailed as a groundbreaking work, the Wikipedia has grown explosively from its founding in January of 2001 to contain over 300,000 articles in English alone (and over 900,000 articles total in 83 different languages).

Let’s see… We have penicillin, motorized wheelchairs, pneumatic tires, and now Escape-A-Date.

I’m so glad I’m not single.
